Trying on costumes

Every girl dreams of being a princess, right? Well, at least that is what I thought until we tried on Holloween costumes. We have had this beautiful blue princess dress for about a year now. I figured it would be a slam dunk. Well, here is Miranda's rection.

She burst into tears and tried to pull it off. I tried a couple different times and ways all ending in tears. So thankfully grandma took us shopping the next day. We wondered around the Disney store and found the perfect Miranda approved costume.

I never knew having a girl would be so much fun and challenging. As a girl I practiced on my cabbage patch kids, of course. I use to love dressing them up and doing their hair. Although Miranda is much wigglier and less cooperative....she is much more fun!!

For the fourth of July we got a big blanket and hung out in the back of Jim's truck. Our neighbors usually put on a pretty good show. We bought a couple of poppers to have some fun with. Miranda liked the poppers, but when it came time for real fireworks she was not too thrilled. Our neighbors did not put on the big show that they usually do, but we managed some fun anyways.

Big Brother

Ethan is already such a good big brother. He mentions very often how much he loves his baby sister. I told him when I was pregnant with Miranda that he would someday be her favorite person. Miranda lights up and squeals with delight when she sees her brother. I love watching them play together.

We caught this moment also on video tape. Miranda crawled over to her brother screaming with pure joy and gave him a couple of pats on the butt.

Oh the things she will learn and pick up from her brother.

Although they don't look very much alike, they will be stuck with each other for the rest of their lives. But somehow I think they are okay with that.

Fun with Cake

One of the things you look forward to when your child turns one is the cake and the expected mess. Well, with Ethan there was so much expectation and we did not quite get what we expected. Ethan did not like his cake and wanted it off of his hands as soon as possible. Well, then there is Miranda. First she poked the cake, got some on her fingers, put a little in her mouth and was very interested. Then Jim put on a little U2 and she got very into it. Her cake became a drum and we got the mess we always expected.

So much fun! It took a couple of tries to get the cake out of her hair. Her hair was a little greasy until we could get it all out. Worth every minute!

First Birthday Project.

Jim is all about fairness and making sure the kids are equal. Being the third boy Jim did not get quite as many pictures as the first two or the lovely girl that followed. So Jim always tries to do for Miranda what he did for Ethan. On Ethan's first birthday we got a border and put paint on his hands and feet to decorate it. It then became the frame for his one year picture (it is in the background in one of the pictures below). Lisa and Jim have more of a memory of Ethan's painting session than I since I was quite under the weather with food poisoning. Luckily, this time I was able to participate. So here are some photos from Miranda's painting session.

Miranda was much more cooperative than Ethan. Ethan did not like the paint and put up quite a fight. Miranda was very laid back and did not mind the gooey paint so much.

Auntie Lisa go the fun job of scooping off the excess, since the first hand print came out a little blurry.

We gave Ethan a chance to make a couple of hand prints. What a different 5 years makes. In the background you can see his one year birthday project.

This is my all time favorite picture of Miranda (so far). Jim and I have taken thousands of pictures of her. As most babies are very wiggly and uncooperative, there is usually a good one here and there, and many funny ones in between. This one came out so perfect,I just love it!

Jim decided to have a little fun at bath time. Miranda's hair is getting longer, so the mohawk was a must. We kept trying to get her to make this face where she scrunches up her nose. Last Friday was my mom's annual fund raising event, so we asked Nana to come and watch the kids. Ethan usually takes these evenings to try to get away with as much as possible. So when feeding time came he asked if he could feed Miranda. Nana was hoping to get this honor since she does not often get to. She definitely took one for the team and let Ethan feed Miranda the whole bottle. Thankfully she grabbed our camera and captured these photos for us.

This year my birthday fell on a Friday, so I had a great weekend of celebrating. It started with my mom taking us out to lunch to Claim Jumper's. Miranda did pretty well and really entertained us when we gave her an apple for the first time.

Dinner at Kabuki.....I love Japanese food! Teriyaki and Tempura!

On Saturday night we finally used our Christmas present from 2007 that Erin gave the Richard family. We went to a really good Cuban restaurant called Mojito. The pictures don't really capture the really great food and fun atmosphere. I had a terrific steak and an even better margarita! So Lisa, when are we going back?

Thanks everybody for a great birthday! Sorry Lisa that you did not feel good for most of it. We need a make up weekend.

Tonight after Ethan's bath while getting his pj's on, he asks "Mommy, does Jesus take baths?" I turn to him (trying very hard not to laugh), I answer "well, He use to take baths I'm sure, but not any more." So then he says, "Oh, He takes showers."

Kids are so cute and sometimes very simplistic. Sometimes I miss those days, but I think it is even better living it again through my kids.

It has become our tradition to go to Lombardi Ranch to pick out our pumpkin. Her are some of the picture from our pumpkin patch adventure.

This was actutualy one of the last photos taken, but it posted a little higher. It was a little windy, she was tired and hungry. She was not having quite as much fun as Ethan. Hopefully she will next year.

When I saw this onesie I knew that I had to have it for Miranda. She is very cautious and generally does not give out smiles. However, whenever this onesie was put on her she was always in the best mood and we would get pictures like this.

It took getting a cold for us to get the corresponding face for the corresponding emotion (anyone know the movie?). Thanks to Ethan and kindergarten poor little Miranda got a cold and we could not pass up the opportunity to get the grumpy face and outfit to match.

Here are a few of the photos from our photo session on Saturday. We got a lot of really good photos. I did not include the pictures that we picked for prints, so there are still some surprises. We did not know it but poor little Miranda was getting Ethan's cold that he brought back from kindergarten. It took some work and some silliness, but we managed to get some smiles out of her. Even when we didn't she was so very cute.

Even thought it was really about getting Miranda's 6 month pictures, the lady did an excellent job of including Ethan.

6 Months

It's hard to believe that 6 months ago today this little angel was born. She is such a blessing. Today we went to have her pictures taken. We are trying to do what we did with Ethan, so that we are fair to Miranda. Plus it is fun to compare what they look like at the same age.

Miranda has stranger anxiety plus being very tired made for an interesting time. The pictures turned out so good. Her crabbiness worked out to our advantage too, we got the cutest picture of her crying. We also got some great ones of her smiling. Ethan even got in the act and his favorite part was getting pictures on the motorcycle.

I was given a mission from Lisa, and I chose to accept it. Sue just got and her ears pierced and Lisa wanted pictures. So here is Sue with her studs still in.

After I took the others she decided she wanted to try to change her earrings for the first time. She thought it would be good while she had me there for back up. She wanted to put one of the pairs that Lisa got for her. In the middle of changing them she was completely disgusted by the fact that there were holes in her ears. Upon having difficulty taking the old ones out and putting new ones on she said "I almost wish I hadn't done this!" I told her it gets easier with practice. I saw her the next day and she said it was much easier getting the stud back in. Isn't she just adorable in these pictures!

Miranda got her casts off last week. Here are a couple of pictures of her and her new shoes.

Jim thinks after this she will make a pretty good snowboarder.

It did not take long for her to figure out that those string things were a big key to the shoes. We had to start double knotting them as she kept untying them.

As you can see she does not let them get her down. The first day she was a little frustrated that she could not separate her feet. But I think even though her feet are stuck together she prefers the shoes to the casts. I know she is very happy that the shoes can come off and she gets a bath.

I can't believe that my baby is starting kindergarten. Here he is eating an early lunch before going to his afternoon class.

Of course mommy and daddy need to document this momentous day with both cameras.

Departure was a little hard on Ethan. There were some tears at first. But as soon as we moved where he could not see us he calmed down. The poor lady in the yellow shirt had to gather all the criers and try to get them to their classroom. By this point Ethan is okay. We took these pictures from around the corner and then quickly disappeared.

I think he had a pretty good first day. Details are hard to get out of him. When asked what his favorite part of the day was, he answered recess.

First Tooth to go

Ethan just lost his first tooth. After asking for many months when he would loose a tooth, he finally got his first wiggly tooth. One night while brushing his teeth he was complaining about how wiggly it was. So Jim just gently took a hold of it and it just came right out.

Well, the tooth fairy left Ethan a dollar for his tooth. Which would be HUGE in my day. I only got a quarter a tooth and Jim said he go a bag of coins. So the next morning Ethan comes up to me and says "mommy, I am disappointed." I said why. He then tells me that he only got a dollar from the tooth fairy and not a toy. So Jim and I spend most of the day explaining how lucky he is compared to us and that he could turn his tooth fairy profits into any toy he wants. Later that day I learned that he did not really understand how much a dollar was when he said he would of rather of gotten a penny. I told him I would trade his dollar for a penny. Jim and I explained that a dollar was 100 pennies. By the end of the day he was a little more excited about his dollar.

Miranda's new accessories

This was Miranda a couple weeks ago. I noticed that her feet turned in a little shortly after she was born. At her first months appointment I brought it up to the doctor and she said to do stretching exercises. By her 2 month appointment they were a little better but not much. The doctor took an x-ray and wanted to send her to a specialist.
I was not quite prepared for what was about to happen at the specialist. After examining Miranda he said she has mild club feet and he would be putting her in casts today. I was stunned. I was prepared for, lets watch the feet do some more exercises and if they don't improve the corrective shoes. I was not prepared for her to be put in casts immediately and really was not prepared for the casts to be from her toes to her thighs.

So, she will have this set on for three weeks (they come off August 1st), then fitted for corrective shoes and the casts go right back on for three more weeks, then corrective shoes will be worn 24 hours a day for 2-3 months and then she will just need to wear the shoes at night to sleep in for a couple of years.

Miranda was less than thrilled and so were we. It was a very rough week. It took a lot of adjusting for all of us. For the first couple of days all Miranda would do is cry. Sleeping took a lot of getting used to. Since she was used to curling her legs up under her she had a hard time getting comfortable.
This was her expression for a couple of days. She was very unhappy. She went from smiling and talking all the time to this sad little face and crying. But thankfully it did not last and our happy little girl came back. Thank God babies are resilient and flexible. She has learned how get around the casts. In fact she can pick them up and move them around now. So now I have to watch out because they have become weapons. She likes to pick them up and throw them down on my leg as I am feeding her.

I take comfort in knowing that her only memory of these casts will be these pictures. After her appointment of course I went online a read a bunch of stuff. I have seen that it could be worse and I am grateful that it is not. I miss her chubby little legs and feet and I can't wait to nibble on them again.

I can't believe my baby is already graduating from pre-school. It seems like just yesterday he was learning to crawl and make everyone laugh with his mad face. In just a couple of weeks he will be starting kindergarten....and the adventure begins.

He was tired of the same picture of Miranda just laying on her changing table. So we got a little creative with our little model.

Ten years ago I married this very handsome and wonderful man. On May 30, 1998 I was totally and head over heals in love with Jim Richard and could not wait to start my life with him. Now ten years and two kids later, I love him more than the day I said "I DO". He is my best friend, my hero and the best thing that has ever happened to me. It is an honor to be his wife.

Jim is also a very wonderful father. Ethan and Miranda are very lucky to have such a loving and attentive father. I pray that when Ethan grows up he is as good a man as his father.

Miranda is already head over heals in love with her daddy. The shirt below tells it all. As soon as she is picked up by daddy she greets him with a huge smile. I however usually get deer in the headlights or crying because she wants to eat. She smiles, flirts and gurgles at her daddy. She absolutely loves her daddy, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Thank you Jim for marrying me ten years ago today! Thank you for being right by my side through the good and the bad. I love you more than words can express! Happy 10 year Anniversary sweetheart!!!!

This last weekend it just happened that both Nana and grandma wanted to come for a visit. Having both of them here turned out to be a good thing. They both traded off between their grandson and granddaughter. While one got to hold Miranda the other played play dough or outside with Ethan. And the best part was that Jim and I got a break and did not have to entertain either of our children... and we got a free meal which neither of us has to cook.

Jim had a stroke of genius. We had planned on getting a gift for Miranda to give to Ethan at the hospital. So Jim came up with giving Ethan a kids digital camera. Miranda like her brother Ethan we were told has jaundice. But unlike her brother she did not need to be put under lights, thank goodness. The doctor said lots of sunbathing, eating and pooping were the key. So she has spent most of her days lying around in the sun, which makes her sleepy and then she does not want to sleep so good at night. If only there was a way to have sunshine on her at night so that Jim and I could also get some sleep.

On one of the nice warm days Jim and I thought the perfect outfit for sunbathing would be one made by her Auntie Lisa. Thank you again Auntie Lisa for the beautiful onesies. Don't I look so very cute?

The other day before lunch Ethan said "mommy we should pray". I said great idea Ethan, do you want to start? So here is Ethan's prayer, "Thank you God for the wonderful food, thank you for the wonderful drinks, and I guess I can handle it if you give me a baby brother or a baby sister, Amen".

Ethan prayed for about two years now to have baby sister, and now that we are finally pregnant is has changed to I want a baby brother. We keep telling him that since he has prayed for both then God will answer his prayer no matter what. We all really want a girl, so maybe this prayer is Ethan warming up to the idea.

Hair cut

For a while now I have wanted to donate my hair to Locks for Love. Not really knowing how or where I let it go. So when Irene told me that her sister's salon would donate my hair for me I got very excited. So on a whim last Friday I called Inez to see if she could fit me in. Saturday morning I was showered and ready incase Inez could fit me in. I called at 2 and she said if I made it by 3 she would squeeze me in.

Inez said are you sure you want to donate? I said yes. She put my hair in a pony tail and with one swift cut my hair was gone. As she held my pony tail in her hand I was in complete shock. Inez trimed and then straightened my hair for me.

I was in shock for a couple of days. There were tears by day two. I would definitly not have gone this short...but it was for a good cause. I have done my hair the normal curly way and I guess it's okay. I think it will take a while before I am use to it. Although for the summer I think it will be nice.

Here I am on Mother's day with my long curly hair. Which I was quite annoyed with then but I am missing at the moment.

Today Ethan an I took my grandma to her doctors appointment for a check up. Dr. Nelson came in and after a little small talk Ethan says "Excuse mr doctor?" Dr. Nelson said yes. Ethan then tells him in a very authoritative voice (as he is 4 and already knows everything) my heart says pickle, pickle, pickle. So Dr. Nelson put the stephascope (however it's spelled) on Ethan's ears so he can hear what the heart really sounds like. Dr. Nelson asks Ethan what he hears. Ethan replies "pickle, pickle, pickle. Dr. Nelson says "hum, mine only says lub-dub, lub-dub.

The day that I have dreaded for so long is almost upon me. Tomorrow is my baby's first day of school. Ethan will be starting pre-k and will be going for 2 half days. Part of me is very excited at the fact that I will have a break from the constant flow of words coming out of my 4 year old. The other part of me cannot bear the thought of leaving my baby. I know this is what Ethan needs and it will be great for him. He is a sponge absorbing everything, so I would rather he get knowledge from school than bad habits from my crazy grandma.

Ethan is going throught an animal phase. He goes back and forth between being a cat and a dog. This inculdes my least favorite thing that he does....he sniffs everything. I am trying to teach he that this is not always appropriate, but he is four and a boy. Well, during our photo shoot at Sear's, during one of the pictures, Ethan began sniffing the big 4 he was suppose to be smiling next to.

This is one of my favorite pictures of my brother and I. This was how we would take a picture toether...Jimmy would fold his hands and pop his thumbs up, I would sit in his lap and grab onto his thumbs.

My brother was my most favorite person on the planet. Jimmy taught me to skate, swim and surf. I still remember two out of three. I had big plans for him, I knew he would teach me to drive and some day walk me down the aisle. Unfortunately Jimmy was taken from me when I was eleven. I miss him every day of my life but his imprint on my heart will never fade away. Ethan's middle name is James, most people think it is after his father but it is actually for my brother.

Frustraiting.

Lately one of Ethan's favorite phrases while playing with a toy and having a hard time with it is "I am so frustraiting". What he means to say is that he is frustraited. Most of the time I just look at him, smile and try to encourage him to keep trying. Then there are those days when I just look at him and all I can say "yes you are".

We have started a new tradition since we moved to Castaic. The night before Halloween we have a pumpkin caving party and invite all our neighbors. I make a big pot of chili and really yummy cornbread. This was the first year Ethan got to carve his own pumpkin.

Ethan is working very hard on his happy pumpkin. He thinks pumpkins should not be mean looking but have happy faces.

1. After I was born and taken to the hopital, I was put in a janitor's closet across from my mom's room.

2. When I was 1 or 2 I ate an oleander leaf which almost killed me.

3. I was bilingual by the age of 5.

I have always known that my sister is much cooler than I. She is probably the coolest person that I know and I feel very lucky to have her as my sister.

She is the one who started my myspace page and my blog. Now I try to keep up with both so that I do not disappoint or let her down.

My husband is my hero and also one of the coolest people in the world. He is so good at so many things and already proven to be quite the blogger (watch out Tates).

Now I need to face the fact that my three and a half year old son is also cooler than I. He's got his daddy's handsom looks, he is already good at sports, he is musically inclined and now has his own blogspot.

If I did not love these three so much I would probably be jealous. I thank God for giving me such a wonderful family. I guess you could say that these three make me cool.
